Case Study: King Springs Coolant

How did Excision's advanced coolant solution revolutionize King Springs' operations? They switched over to XDP3200 Neo-Synthetic coolant, delivering impressive results while emphasizing safety and efficiency.

Who is the customer?

King Springs is Australia's leading specialist manufacturer of aftermarket coil springs for world-wide, automotive applications, with internal capabilities to design, develop and manufacture.

What was the problem?

King Springs approached Excision because their existing coolant supplier had made the decision to stop importing their existing cutting fluid.

What was the process?

Excision then began our discovery process in order to understand the requirements of King Springs. Initially we took samples of the existing product in order to understand its properties. It was clear that this product was performing well, however the reason for changing was that it was no longer available. With this in mind we aimed to offer a product that was equal or better in performance.

The key priorities for King Springs

  • WHS – Health and Safety was a key priority for the team at King Springs.
    • No excessive unpleasant or dangerous fumes
    • No ingredients that cause eye or skin irritation or reaction
    • No requirements for special equipment to handle the coolant in its concentrated form
  • Improved or equivalent tool life, without increasing the concentration of coolant
  • Good foam performance, given the product is heavily agitated in the application
  • Stable sump life, no bacteria attacks in the life of the coolant

The Solution

After analyzing the sample of the existing product we proposed starting with a trial of XDP 3200. XDP 3200 is a Neo-Synthetic cutting fluid with excellent performance on steels. We initially said that XDP 3200 would offer the following advantages

  • Less foam than the existing product
  • Improved lubricity, meaning longer tool life at the same concentration
  • XDP 3200 is free of Boric acid, Formaldehyde releasers, and other harmful additives, meaning it will be safe for all operators.

King Springs then proceeded with a trial in one of their bar peeling machines.

The Results

Within 2 weeks we had received the following feedback.

Your product is delivering in spades. Increased tool life, lower machine operating temperature, improved finish on the output product, all while running on a lower concentration to our previously used coolant.

We’re all very impressed.

  • Tool life when using the XDP 3200 was equivalent to the previous product, even though it was running at about half the concentration level. Previous product was running at 13-15% concentration, and the XDP 3200 was running at 6-8% concentration.

  • The temperature in the machine was approximately 10° cooler with the XDP 3200, meaning that the cooling performance was improved significantly

  • Corrosion protection achieved equivalent to existing product

In summary the transition to XDP 3200 from the existing product meant that King Springs was able to reduce their consumption of Coolant without impacting their tool life negatively.
